Question about thermal baselayer clothing?
Is there any thermal baselayer clothing out there that I can wear in 20 degrees Fahrenheit weather or lower and still be fine? I want to wear JUST the baselayers and no other clothing over top of it. Does such a thing exist nowadays? If so, what’s your experience with it?
Base layers are designed to reflect heat back toward the body, while moving moisture away from the skin. Most of these fabrics do not offer any wind resistance or water repellency, so would not work as an “only” layer at colder temps. The closest thing that i can think of would be a downhill speed suit, which is a bonded, multi-layer material made of a polyester/ olefin/ polyurethane blend bonded to a breathable membrane.
There are also other fabrics used in soft shells ( Schoeller Dri-skin, Coolmax, etc) that offer a combination of reflectivity, wind resistance and water repellency, but these usually do not have enough stretch to fit snugly, and are bulkier than a base layer.
The amount of warmth retained by any fabric is directly porportional to your activity level, so, for example, a downhill suit that would keep you warm while being active would not offer the same level of warmth if you where sitting in the bleachers.
